課程概述 |
This course is one of the key core courses in the chemical engineering discipline for undergraduate students, and this class is aimed to equip students with the much-needed mathematic knowledge and skills to approach a variety of engineering problems. The main topics that will be covered in this course are differential equations (1st order, 2nd order, higher orders, systems of ODEs, as well as series solutions and some special functions) and Laplace transforms. |

課程目標 |
The objective of this course is to equip students with fundamental mathematic skills to solve engineering problems. In this course, the primary focuses are on the differential equations and Laplace transforms. Vector analysis will also be covered.
The breakdowns of the course content are as the followings:
1. First-order ODEs
2. Second-order (& higher-order) linear ODEs
3. Series solution of ODEs and special functions
4. Laplace transforms
5. Numerical methods for ODEs (if time permits)
With the course, students will have the core ability to solve differential equations and to perform Laplace transform for engineering problems, particularly with a focus on chemical engineering related ones. |

Homework assignment |

Homework will be typically assigned on a biweekly basis and must be submitted electronically (in pdf) by 6:00 PM on the due date. Homework that is turned in late will NOT be accepted (i.e., no credits). A total of approximately 7 assignments are planned for the semester, and each account for 3%, except for the 1st one being 2%, of the total grade of the course. *Make sure your submitted homework is clear and easy to read*
* To reflect the “weight” difference between HW1 and HW2-7, the total scores of HW1 and HW2-7 are set to be 100 pts and 150 pts, respectively. |

The exam time will be 2 hours. The exam will be held on Friday (12/23, tentatively) from 10:10am (10 mins before the regular class time) to 12:10am. This exam is cumulative and is closed book and closed note. |
